So, how do you know if you are experiencing a dental emergency? There are some common reasons which include:

  • Experiencing an accident involving your face or jaws
  • Experiencing a sports injury that involves your face or jaws
  • Knocking a tooth loose
  • knocking out a tooth completely
  • Breaking a tooth

There are also less obvious issues, like these:

  • You have tooth pain that increases
  • You have chronic tooth pain that never goes away
  • Your filling or crown has fallen out
  • Your dental bridge has become loose
  • Your dental implant has become loose
  • You have a white or red bump on your gums next to a tooth root
  • You have facial swelling associated with a painful tooth

Your emergency dentist will perform a dental examination, including x-rays to determine the cause of your dental emergency. Once a diagnosis is made, your emergency dentist will discuss treatment options with you so you can decide on the appropriate treatment together.

The first priority for your emergency dentist is to relieve your pain. If you have a dental infection, this may include a prescription for antibiotics. If you are suffering from tooth decay, you may need a filling or a dental crown. If you have a dental abscess, you may need a root canal.

Routine dental care helps reduce the likelihood of dental emergencies, but accidents and illnesses can and do happen. At Elliff Dental in Batavia, Illinois, our dentists are well-trained in dealing with emergencies related to the teeth, but the layperson may not know what constitutes a dental emergency. Drs. Laura and Andrew Elliff recommend that their patients follow the general guidelines below to determine if they need emergency dental care.

What is a dental emergency?

True dental emergencies are fairly well-defined. Having a tooth knocked out, or avulsed, requires quick action in order to reattach it, preferably within an hour. These teeth should be kept in milk or a preservation solution - available at most drugstores - in the meantime. Teeth that have luxated, or shifted out of place due to an accident, also need immediate treatment. Breakage also requires quick intervention if pain is involved. In general, any time you have bleeding, uncontrollable pain, swelling, or a fever associated with your teeth, you should be seen by your Batavia dentist right away.

What is not a dental emergency?

Certain dental situations are considered "urgent" but can typically wait until Elliff Dental is open to be evaluated. If you've chipped a tooth or lost a crown or filling, for example, it should be repaired as soon as possible. However, if it's not causing any pain but has a sharp edge, you can cover it with sugarless gum or orthodontic wax until your Batavia dentist is available to fix it. A piece of food that is lodged between the teeth can cause uncomfortable pressure, but if you can't remove it yourself with floss or a toothpick, wait to contact your dentist until the next day. Tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, a noticeable cavity, or a loose bracket on braces are all issues that don't usually require immediate care.
