What is a dental emergency?

True dental emergencies are fairly well-defined. Having a tooth knocked out, or avulsed, requires quick action in order to reattach it, preferably within an hour. These teeth should be kept in milk or a preservation solution - available at most drugstores - in the meantime. Teeth that have luxated, or shifted out of place due to an accident, also need immediate treatment. Breakage also requires quick intervention if pain is involved. In general, any time you have bleeding, uncontrollable pain, swelling, or a fever associated with your teeth, you should be seen by your Batavia dentist right away.

What is not a dental emergency?

Certain dental situations are considered "urgent" but can typically wait until Elliff Dental is open to be evaluated. If you've chipped a tooth or lost a crown or filling, for example, it should be repaired as soon as possible. However, if it's not causing any pain but has a sharp edge, you can cover it with sugarless gum or orthodontic wax until your Batavia dentist is available to fix it. A piece of food that is lodged between the teeth can cause uncomfortable pressure, but if you can't remove it yourself with floss or a toothpick, wait to contact your dentist until the next day. Tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums, a noticeable cavity, or a loose bracket on braces are all issues that don't usually require immediate care.
